The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hydrolithon is Hydrolithon reinboldii (Weber Bosse & Foslie) Foslie.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pneophyllum discoideum (Foslie) Puckree-Padua, Maneveldt & P.W.Gabrielson.

Lectotype locality: Mouth of Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 73) Lectotype: P.Dusén; February 1896; TRH; A9-449 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 73) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Adey & Lebednik (1967: 24). "see Adey 1970: 24 for typification" (Chamberlain (1994: 148). "It is uncertain whether Tierra del Fuego refers to Tierra del Fuego Island or the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, and it also is uncertain whether the material was collected in Chile or Argentina." (Woelkering et al. 2005: 73). LT designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik, 1967 (see Puckree-Padua et al, 2020; INA). Lectotype sequenced: GenBank Accession MN882573.
