Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Womersleyella herpa (Hollenberg) R.E.Norris.

Type locality: Near Otetou, Raroia Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago; (Price & Scott 1992: 204) Holotype: M.S.Doty & J.Newhouse; 21 August 1952; abundant in tufts on dead coral on the sea reef; BPBMH; 510383 (MSD 11857.2) (Price & Scott 1992: 204)
