The type species (holotype) of the genus Phacus is Phacus longicauda (Ehrenberg) Dujardin.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lepocinclis ovum (Ehrenberg) Lemmermann.

Type Information
Type locality: Berlin, Germany; (Ehrenberg 1840: 200) Notes: Lectotype: Ehrenberg, unpublished drawing no. 551, dated April 1840 (B). Epitype: in Culture Collection of Algae at Univ. of Cologne Strain AICB 278 (CCAC 0099) permanently preserved (cells in resin for electron microscopy) (Marin et al. 2003: 103). Not correctly designated by Marin et al. (2003: 103) and further designated by Bozen & al. (2020: 1), who also designated an epitype [Figure 3a in Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al. (2019)], a representative DNA sequence: GenBank AF110419, and a representative strain, SAG 1244-8. The epitype locality is freshwater, cattle pond near Talty Lake, Mazurian Lake District, Poland.
