The type species (holotype) of the genus Thoracosphaera is Thoracosphaera pelagica Kamptner.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leonella granifera (D.Fütterer) Janofske & Karwath.

Type locality: Sierra Leone Rise, eastern Atlantic (05º40.7'N, 19º51.1'W); Late Pliocene; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: Pl. 2: figs 1, 4, 7: (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Deep Sea Drilling Project sample 366A-4-4, 64-66 cm.
