Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Oocystis is Oocystis naegelii A.Braun.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ecdysichlamys polymorpha (Groover & Bold) Komárek & Comas.

Type locality: "Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas" [USA]; (Groover & Bold 1968: 134) Holotype: NY; (Groover & Bold 1968: 134) Notes: "Strain HCB-B, the contaminant at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, is designated as the type culture. Transfers of this have been deposited in the Culture Collection of Algae, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. An herbarium specimen has been deposited in the Chicago Natural History Museum."

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), polymorphous, polymorphic; variable in form (Brown 1954).
