Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramothamnion sinicola (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) M.J.Wynne & C.W.Schneider.
Type Information
Type locality: Ensenada Bay, Lower California; (Setchell & Gardner 1924: 774) Type: Ivan M. Johnston (no. 67b); April; Found unattached among the fronds of Laurencia sp.; Herb. Uni. Acad. Sci.; 1366 (Setchell & Gardner 1924: 774) Notes: According to Dawson (1962: 65) the type locality is Ensenada Bay (Todos Santos Bay at Ensenada), Pacific Baja California. He notes that the type specimen is located in Herb. California Academy of Sciences and that there is an isotype slide located in Herb. A Hancock Foundation.
