Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata hypnoides (Welwitsch) Kuntze.

Type Information
Type locality: "Hab. supra rupes coralliniferas oceani atlantici prope Olyssiponam (Welwitsch!)." [on coralliniferous stones near Lisbon]; (Agardh 1863: 933) Holotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 39346 (Phycotheca Lusitana no. 292) (Díaz-Tapia & Bárbara 2013: 331) Notes: Type locality: Arrábida, Portugal (Diaz-Tapia & Bárbara, 2013).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), resembling the mosses, specifically the genus Hypnum (Neal 1993).
