Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium mcnabbianum (E.Y.Dawson) Santelices.

Type locality: Golfito Bay, near Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica; (Dawson 1957: 15) Type: 13th June 1957; forming small mats on the iron hull of a sunken ship; Dawson; 16822 (Dawson 1957: 15) Notes: Additonal material: D. 16859a, D. 16861. Named for Mr John Mc Nabb of Los Angeles, California.
