Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type locality: "numbers in the water of a small roadside pit in Child's Piece, a wood about two miles west of Mortimer Common (Ordnance Survey Grid Reference: SP 636643)" [England]; (Cridland 1958: 286)
