Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima (Hasle) Hasle.

Type Information
Type locality: from scattered localities in the North Atlantic (approximately 17º to 67ºN) as well as from Canadian and Chilean waters; (Lundholm, Moestrup, Hasle & Hoef-Emden, 2003: 797)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), very delicate (Stearn 1973).
