Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Prolifera is Prolifera rivularis (Linnaeus) Vaucher.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophora rivularis (Linnaeus) Kuntze.
Type Information
Notes: Van de Hoek (1963: 113) notes type specimen lost (see Blum, 1953). Description and figure, however, suggest Cl. rivularis.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), crisped, irregularly waved and twisted (Stearn 1973).
