Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herposiphonia versicolor (Hooker & Harvey) Reinbold.

Type locality: Western Port, Victoria; (Womersley 2003: 295) Holotype: MEL; 45813 (Womersley 2003: 295) Notes: Based on a Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 197H specimen. Isotypes: Trav. Set 354, in MEL, 45821 and 1006754.

Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latinised), Latinised form of the Greek, argos, white; the hundred-eyed keeper of Io, killed by Mercury at the command of Jupiter (Smith & Lockwood 1933).
