The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bacillaria paxillifera var. tumidula (Grunow) Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin.

Type locality: Bengal [Bangladesh], East Indies; (Jahn & Schmid, 2007: 305) Lectotype: Presumed freshwater/brackish as Surirella, Cymatopleura, Hantzschia, Rhopalodia and Cymbella present; W; Diat 78 (Jahn & Schmid, 2007: 305) Notes: Lectotype (designated by Jahn & Schmid, 2007): Cleve & Moller, Diat 78, Nitzschia Kurzii Rabh., East Indies at W (Fig. 9).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), paradoxical.
