The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pleonosporium borreri (Smith) Nägeli.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), saturn-red, flame-scarlet; literally, ‘painted with red lead’ (Stearn 1973).
