Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilariopsis heteroclada J.-F.Zhang & B.-M.Xia.

Holotype locality: Yinggehai, Hainan Island, Guangdong Province, China ; (Chang & Xia 1988: 134) Holotype: Zhang Junfu and Xia Bangmei; 29 April 1980; On shells or gravel in mud flats and in tide pool or canal in midtidal to low intertidal region; QD; 80-2338 (Chang & Xia 1988: 134) Notes: Holotype: cystocarpic. Isotypes from the same place and date, AST 80-2337, spermatangial; AST 80-2338a, cystocarpic. AST 80-2358, tetrasporangial, from the same place and by the same collectors, April 30, 1980 (AST, BISH). For other material see Zhang & Xia (1988: 134).
