The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halimeda copiosa f. elongata (E.S.Barton) Hillis-Colinvaux.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), wedge-shaped (Brown 1946).
