The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus ferulaceus (Suhr ex J.Agardh) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Syntype localities: "in rupibus maritimis infra limitem maris atlantici ad oras Mexici (Liebmann!) et Americae septentrionalis (Harvey!), ad insulam Guadeloupe (Duchassaing!); in oceano australi ad littora Novae Hollandiae! nec non ad Insulas Noukahiva (Jardin!) et Sandvich (Hb. Agardh)" [on the rocks below the sea at the coast; Atlantic Mexico; North America; Guadeloupe, West Indies; Hawaiian Islands; Marquesas Islands; Australia]; (Agardh 1863: 980) Notes: Lectotypification required from material at LD (Huisman 2018: 542).

Adjective (Latin), resembling the giant fennel (genus Ferula) (Neal 1993).
