The type species (holotype) of the genus Melosira is Melosira nummuloides C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ellerbeckia cretacea (Jousé) P.A.Sims & R.M.Crawford.

Type locality: Russia: S. Urals: River Sinja (cretaceous); (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Synya River in the Polar Urals in mudstones of the Lower Campanian, Upper Cretaceous (Sims & Crawford, 2017).
