Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Diploneis is Diploneis didymus (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.

Type Information
Type locality: Sabine River, Orange Co., Texas; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: 28 April 1953; ANSP; (Desianti, Potapova & Beals 2015: table 1) Notes: Louisiana, Calcsieu Parish, Sabine River, c. 100 yards above Intracoastal Waterway, from 25 yards above cypress grove to c. 150 yards below grove, west side of Cutoff Island (30.057011°N, 93.717454°W) (Desianti et al., 2015: table 1). According to Desianti et al. (2015: 114), slide GC8099 is listed in Hohn & Hellerman (1966) as bearing the type of Diploneis hormopunctata and Surirella striatula var. spinifera. There are two replicate slides in the Herbarium, GC8099a, which is marked as the holotype for both species, and GC8099b, which must be considered an isotype. However, no specimens matching the descriptions of these species can be found on either slide.
