Description: Colonies discoid, consisting of 2-32 cells. Cells wall-less, somewhat metabolic, with one-4 chloroplasts and two contractile vacuoles. Numerous fine rhizopodia extend from the colony, which is surrounded by numerous symbiotic, coccoid bacteria. Reproduction by longitudinal cell division and byzoospores, which are nearly spherical, with one visible flagellum. Stomatocysts observed in one species. No sexual reproduction. Found mainly in turf pits, cosmopolitan distribution.
