Taxonomic note
Neidium ampliatum sensu lato (Mann & Chepurnov, 2005). Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot (2007: 178) comment "As already mentioned by several authors the 'second hand' concepts of N. ampliatum are extremely broad and that taxon has served as a 'rag bag' including more than a few independent taxa. N. boyeri Reimer 1959 from North America differs by much less convergent striae distally. N. boyeri Reimer 1959 is considerably broader and possesses abruptly protracted ends. Neidium affine var. ceylonica (Skvortzow) Reimer 1959 possesses much more densely spaced striae and areolae. The conspecificity of N. ampliatum from Ireland, Skvortzow's taxon from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Reimer's population from Connecticut, U.S.A, is questionable and even very unlikely." See Cantonati, Kelly & Lange-Bertalot (2017: 421 and note on p. 422). - (11 May 2006) - M.D. Guiry
