Nomenclatural note
Novais et al. (2015: 31) point out that Krammer (2000, p. 104) give Pinnularia interrupta W.Smith 1853, as a synonym of Pinnularia biceps. W.Gregory, 1856, even though Pinnularia interrupta W.Smith is obviously the earlier name. However, Novais et al. (2015: 77) subsequently in the same work reverse the synonymy. Krammer (2000: 104) may have considered Pinnularia interrupta W.Smith as illegitimate as Stauroneis parva Kützing is given as a synonym, but INA considers this a "sensu" as Stauroneis parva is treated by Kützing as a combination for Stauroptera parva Ehrenberg. As Smith does not mention Ehrenberg's name Stauroneis parva as cited by Smith can be consdered a sensu and thus does not illegitimise Smith's name. - (11 March 2016) - M.D. Guiry
