Pinnularia placentula Ehrenberg
Type Information
Type locality: "Vera Cruz" [Mexico]; (Ehrenberg 1843: 443) Lectotype [Epitype for lectotype: BM 93093 (Lilliesleaf Pond, "England")]: seaweeds and sediments from the coast of the ocean; BHUPM; fig. 19 on Ehrenberg's drawing sheet No. 2062 (Jahn 2004: 232, fig. 1) Notes: "Cox (2003) designated a neotype for Placoneis placentula (Ehrenberg) Mereschkowski because no Ehrenberg specimen could be found. The original drawing by Ehrenberg is, however, available and was therefore chosen as lectotype by Jahn (2004) with Cox’s neotype rededicated as epitype." (Jahn & Kusber 2009: 103). However, "Lilliesleaf" appears to be in Melrose, Scotland, not England. Ehrenberg (1843: 443) specified "Von den 120 vorn verzeichneten und von mir in Zeichnung vorgelegten Arten von mexikanischen Seethierchen haben hier nur 50 eine Stelle finden können." Thus the lectotype is from a marine habitat in Verz Cruz; it seems strange therefore to have an epitype for this name from a freshwater habitat in Scotland.
