Abstract:
Verdigellas, a new genus of gelatinous green algae, is described from deep-water collections made in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas in the western Atlantic. Verdigellas presently contains two species, V. fimbriata sp. nov., designated the generitype, and V. peltata sp. nov., which have irregularly arranged coccoid cells that are more dense at the surface of the thallus than within. Verdigellas peltata forms simple peltate cushions and is very abundant on deep-reef slopes when encountered. Verdigellas fimbriata is a foliose species with intricate, irregular branches produced along the margins.
