Abstract:
Champia taironensis is described as a new Rhodophyta from the Colombian Caribbean. The species belongs to group of plants with the flat!ened thallus, and had been earlier reported for Colombia as Champia compressa Harvey. The new species differs from the others with flaUened thallus, C. compressa, C. vieillardii Kützing, C. bifida Okamura, C. expansa Yendo, and C. spathulata Weber-Van Bosse, in its habit, mode of aUachment to the substratum, haptera among branches, type of ramification, confinement of longitudinal filaments in the diaphragms, iridescence, and size of inner cortical cells and of tetrasporangia. Additional information on the distinction between C. compressa and C. vieillardii, two species that have long been difficult to separate, is provided.
