Abstract:
Cylindrospermopsis acuminato-crispa sp. nova, a new freshwater cyanophyte
(= cyanobacterium), has been found in samples collected during the years 19971998 in a
reservoir located in Pernambuco State in Northeast of Brazil. This new taxon is described
using light and scanning electron microscopes. It differs from Cylindrospermopsis
catemaco, which is the closest species, by its larger dimensions, its more important cell
number per trichome, its conical-sharp pointed heterocyte morphology and its very acute
trichome apex. With this new taxon, the genus Cylindrospermopsis takes into account now
ten species with two species in Brazil.
