Abstract:
In the course of class work a new dinoflagellate was noted in a pool at Finchampstead,
Berkshire (Grid ref. 790632). It was found in late January in immense numbers but was
already forming resting spores and decreasing. Later in February it became common
again. The pond is large, permanent and surrounded by road on two sides, oak trees and
grass on the others. The water contained few other organisms and was clear apart from
a brown colour due to the dinoflagellates.
The same dinoflagellate, recognized by its characteristic resting spores, was later
found in another Berkshire pond, this time on Wokefield Common 12 km away (Grid ref.
653662). This pond is also large and permanent, situated on gravel and surrounded by
heathland, with birch and scots firs. It was formerly oligotrophic but is now much used
for picnics.
