Abstract:
Closterium karnakense, collected from the Sacred Lake of Karnak Temple (Luxor, Egypt) is described as a new desmid species. Morphologically it is close to Closterium dianae Ralfs and Closterium pseudodianae Roy. In contrast to those species, which occur in oligotrophic soft waters, Closterium karnakense as encountered at Luxor is associated with a eutrophic, slightly saline water type, a rather exceptional habitat for desmids. The issue of ecotypic differentiation as a possible speciation mechanism in desmids is discussed.
