Abstract:
A taxonomic list of green flagellate algae found in continental water bodies of Israel during 1999-2000 is presented. It contains 17 species belonging to one class (Chlamydophyceae), two orders (Chlamydomonadales and Volvocales), five families (Chlamydomonadaceae, Haematococcaceae, Phacotaceae, Spondylomoraceae, and Volvocaceae) and 9 genera. One genus (Pyrobotrys Arnoldi) is recorded for the first time in Israel.Foutheen species are new for Israeli flora, of which six are rare species, and one, Pyrobotrys maxima Massjuk et Lilits. sp. nov. is new species for science. Latin diagnosis and original drawings of the newly described species are presented, as well as drawings and descriptions of local populations of rare taxa, and the discussion on their deviation from the original diagnoses. Perculiarities of taxonomic composition of green flagellate algae of Israel are discussed, as possibilities for future studies.
