Comments: Mendoza (1976: 254) established Antarcticophyllum for A. aequabile (Foslie) M.L. Mendoza and A. subantarcticum (Foslie) M.L. Mendoza and designated A. aequabile as type species. A. aequabile was first described as Lithophyllum discoideum f. aequabile Foslie (Foslie 1905: 17) but then raised to species rank [i.e. Lithophyllum aequabile (Foslie) Foslie (Foslie1906: 22)]. Subsequently, Lemoine (1913: 38) established Lithophyllum subgenus Antarcticophyllum Lemoine for L. aequabile and L. subantarcticum (Foslie) Foslie.
In elevating Antarcticophyllum to generic rank, Mendoza (1976: 254) retained the same two species included by Lemoine. Later, however, Mendoza & Cabioch (1985) concluded from a study of relevant types that A. aequabile (Holotype: TRH, A9-437 — see Woelkerling et al. 2005: 71 under Lithophyllum aequabile) was a heterotypic synonym of Clathromorphum obteculum (Foslie) Adey [Lectotype: TRH, B15-2364 — see Woelkerling et al. 2005: 316 under Lithothamnion obteculum (lectotype designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik 1967: 64)], and that therefore the genus Antarcticophyllum was a heterotypic synonym of Clathromorphum.
