Taxonomic note
Vanormelingen et al. (2007: 378) note that this used to be the most species-rich subgenus of Scenedesmus, but it was given genus status based on 18S and ITS2 rDNA phylogenies (Kessler et al. 1997, An et al. 1999, Van Hannen et al. 2002).
