Nomenclatural note
Y.Hara & Chihara (1967: 161) noted "Hada (1968), when proposing Heterosigma, failed to indicate which of the two original species is the type of the genus, so that the name is unavailable in zoological nomenclature and invalid in botanical nomenclature. Moreover, as a genus of algae, Heterosigma requires a Latin diagnosis for valid publication. We herewith validate the generic name by providing a Latin diagnosis and designating a type species." - (19 May 2017) - M.D. Guiry
