Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Syracosphaera.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Keuter, S., Young, J.R., Koplovitz, G., Zigone, A. & Frada, M.J. (2021). Novel heterococcolithophores, holococcolithophores and life cycle combinations from the families Syracosphaeraceae and Papposphaeraceae and the genus Florisphaera. Journal of Micropalaoentology 40: 75-99, 16 figs.
Comments: Following the recent observations that many holococcolithophores are phases in the life cycles of heterococcolithophores, the family Calyptrosphaeraceae is now known to be polyphyletic, so Jordan et al. (2005) recommend abandoning its use. However, until all or most holococcolith-bearing taxa can be transferred into other existing families, they consider it wise to keep them together.
