Nomenclatural note
Authors differ in their treatment of the gender of Diatoma Bory de Saint-Vincent and Neodiatoma. Bory in his original description of the genus treated it as feminine (or masculine) in his use of the epithet "vulgaris" instead of the neuter "vulgare". However, De Candolle (in Lamark & De Candolle, Fl. Franç. ed 3, vol 2: 48, 1805) in his earlier treatment of Diatoma De Candolle, nom. illeg., treated it as neuter. Diatoma Bory de Saint-Vincent is a conserved name with a conserved type, Diatoma vulgaris, and we have decided to standardize its treatment here as feminine. Name and generitype have been conserved and is treated as feminine in ING. - (27 October 2011) - M.D. Guiry
