Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cocconeis is Cocconeis scutellum Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Planothidium lagerheimii (Cleve) Wetzel & Ector.

Source of Synonymy
Wetzel, C.E. & L.Ector (2014). Planothidium lagerheimii comb. nov. (Bacillariophyta, Achnanthales) a forgotten diatom from South America. Phytotaxa 188(5): 261–267, 20 figures, 1 table.
