The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Frickea lewisiana (Greville) Heiden.

Syntype localities: "India (Sunderbunds) ; Dr. Wallich. Mud from oysters, St. Mary's River, U.S. ; tidal mud from Savannah River, U.S. ; marsh at Pernandina, Florida ; Dr. F. W. Lewis.
