Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), found towards the South.

Synonym(s)
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.

Nomenclatural notes
Sutherland et al. (2016) report this as "Prasiola cf. meridionalis" from two localities in Japan, but their sequences are identical to Prasiola stipitata. - (30 Oct 2016) - M.D. Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Holotype locality: "The specimens taken as the type of this species were collected by one of us (Gardner) at Neah Bay, Washington." (Setchell & Gardner 1920: 291). Type: N.L. Gardner 3824; UC (Setchell & Gardner 1920: 291). Notes: "We are also inclined to refer here specimens collected at 'Minnesota Reef' at Friday Harbor, Washington, and at the entrance to Tomales Bay, California. In the last two localities the species is associated with Gayella constricta [Rosenvingiella constricta]. Cultures, however, strongly indicate the independence of the two plants from one another."
