The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Osmundea coelenterata (D.L.Ballantine & Aponte) M.T.Fujii, Sentíes & Areces.
