The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus gorgoniae (Harvey) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Type locality: Key West, Florida, U.S.A. (Silva & al. 1996: 541). Type: Harvey (25); Blodgett (40); TCD (Index Nominum Algarum Notes: Syntypes: TCD 12801-4, NY 900637-8 (Díaz-Tapia, 2017: table 4).

Díaz-Tapia, P., McIvor, L., Freshwater, D.W., Verbruggen, H., Wynne, M.J. & Maggs, C.A. (2017). The genera Melanothamnus Bornet & Falkenberg and Vertebrata S.F.
