The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Named for Stephen Thayer Olney (1812-1878), Rhode Island businessman and phycologist.
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Kapraun (1978) reported a chromosome number of n=28 for material from North Carolina, wherease the common form of the species, which he referred to Polysiphonia harveyi var. arietina in North Carolina had n=32. Schneider & Searles (1991: 469) refer the common entity to the type variety. May be conspecific with Polysiphonia fibrillosa (Maggs & Hommersand, 1993: 346).
This is a marine species.
