Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptosiphonia olneyi (Harvey) G.W.Saunders & C.W.Schneider.

Taxonomic note
Kapraun (1978) reported a chromosome number of n=28 for material from North Carolina, wherease the common form of the species, which he referred to Polysiphonia harveyi var. arietina in North Carolina had n=32. Schneider & Searles (1991: 469) refer the common entity to the type variety. May be conspecific with Polysiphonia fibrillosa (Maggs & Hommersand, 1993: 346). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
