This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota jamaicensis W.R.Taylor
Type locality: Turnup Breaker, I. St. Davids, Bermuda (Taylor 1960: 630). Type: W. R. Taylor & A. J. Bernatowicz 49-753; 12 April 1949; MICH (Taylor 1960: 630). Notes: Taylor (1960: 630) notes that there is an isotype located at "herbario Universitatis Michiganensis". De Clerck (2003) gives the following data: Holotype: MICH 23953.

De Clerck (2003) notes that Wysor & De Clerck (2003) suggested that this variety of D. ciliolata might actually represent a growth form of D. crenulata.
