Nomenclatural note
Novis & al. (2014: [10]) consider that this name as originally published is invalid. However, Hoham & al.(2002: 1063) specified "Holotype: culture 381A, Colgate University Culture Collection of snow algae; Fig. 4, a-d." so that they type appears to be the illustrations of the cultured material, which is acceptable under Art. 40.5 and the name thus apppears to be valid as treated by INA. - (25 March 2024) - M.D. Guiry

Taxonomic note
Investigations carried out by Remias et al. (2018) revealed that the type strain of Chloromonas rosae var. psychrophila from North America is not related to the blooms of S. cryophila K-1 in alpine snow in Europe. They note that since Sotiella is invalid for species where daughter cells have smooth walls instead of ribbed ones, and the epithet cryophila already exists in Chloromonas (Hoham & Mullet, 1977), a nomen novum for this taxon will be necessary once flagellates can be described. - (27 September 2018) - G.M. Guiry
