Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion soriferum (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Type locality: Mestervik, Malangen, Norway; (Woelkerling 1998: 345) Lectotype: collector not indicated; 20.ix.1890; TRH; B21-2712, includes slides 150 and 151 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 313, 365, 366) Notes: Isolectotypes: PC, Foslie no. 3, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (box collection, filed under Lithothamnion coalescens); PC, unnumbered, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym). Lectotype designated by Adey & Lebednik, 1967: 71 (Peña et al. 2021: 12).
