The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bangia is Bangia atropurpurea (Mertens ex Roth) C.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), sericeous, silky with long straight close-pressed glossy hairs (Stearn 1983).

Nomenclatural note
"This taxon was erected by BORY (1832: 334) based on plants collected from the South Peloponnese coasts. Based on him and following studies (PREDA, 1908-09) the species is close to Conferva atropurpurea (= Bangia atropurpurea), although this taxon is considered nowdays to be a freshwater species (see taxa excludenda). We prefer to cite Bangia sericea within the list of taxa inquirenda until the type specimen is reinvestigated." (Tsiamis & Panayotidis 2019: 6). - (19 January 2021) - M.D. Guiry
