Type Species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Sonderopelta.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sonderophycus coriaceus (Womersley & Sinkora) M.J.Wynne.

Type Information
Type locality: Pondalowie Bay, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia; (Womersley & Sinkora 1981: 87) Holotype: Clarke; 14 February 1981; 2-3 m deep in heavy shade; AD; A52035 (Womersley 1994: 153) Notes: Womersley (1994: 153) notes that there are isotypes in "Marine Algae of southern Australia" No. 214.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Mainly on rough-water coasts in depths of 1-25 m, usually in heavy shade (Womersley & Sinkora 1981: 87). Often abundant in shaded overhangs and caverns or in deeper water (Womersley 1994: 153).
