The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This is a marine species.
Type locality: Mexico: Sonora: between Campo Ona and Campo Viboras, on sea turtle carapace (Silva 1996-to date). Holotype: 21.i.1974; US 160602 (: table 4). Notes: Collector: J.N. Norris 4801 (INA).
