The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus cheloniae (Hollenberg & J.N.Norris) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Type locality: Mexico: Sonora: between Campo Ona and Campo Viboras, on sea turtle carapace (Index Nominum Algarum). Holotype: 21.i.1974; US 160602 (Díaz-Tapia & al. 2017: table 4). Notes: Collector: J.N. Norris 4801 (INA).
