Nomenclatural note
"This species was described by Kützing (1849: 688) on the basis of specimens from the Atlantic (Cádiz, Spain) and the Mediterranean Sea (Naples, Italy). Later, it was illustrated by Kützing (1863: 6, pl. 15/d-e) who limited its distribution area to the Mediterranean Sea (not quoting Cádiz) and with the annotation that the corresponding plate had been erroneously named "C. spinuliferum". The synonymy was established by J. Agardh (1851: 134) who concluded: "Cer. spiniferum Kütz. Sp. Alg. p. 688 nullo dato charactere a Cer. flabelligero distinctum mihi videtur" (It seems to me that no character distinguishes Cer. spiniferum Kütz. Sp. Alg. p. 688 from Cer. flabelligerum). Ignored by Hauck (1882), that species was considered by Ardissone (1883: 116, as C. spinuliferum) as a probable synonym of C. rubrum (= C. virgatum). De Toni (1903: 1477) listed it among the synonyms of C. flabelligerum J. Agardh [= C. gaditanum according to Cremades & Pérez-Cirera (1990: 489)] but made no reference to Kützing's table and excluded with doubt the record from Naples." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 202). - (10 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
