The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Corynecladia elata (C.Agardh) Cassano, M.C.Oliveira & M. T.Fujii

Type locality: King Island, Bass Strait, Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 508). Holotype: LD, Herb. Agardh 37235 (Womersley 2003: 477). Notes: Isotype in PC (Womersley, 2003: 477).

Adjective (Latin), tall.
