Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Encyonema lacustre (C.Agardh) Pantocsek.

Type locality: I am indebted to the kindness of the Rev. W. Smith, F.L.S., who found it in June last in Wareham " North River," densely spreading in a spongy stratum over the clayey bank and bottom of the stream." [Dorset, England]; (Thwaites 1848: 170) Notes: England: Wareham 'North River', densely spreading on clay bank and bottom in spongy stratum, Rev. Smith, June 1847 (INA).
