Type locality: Adriatic Sea (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 511). Lectotype: LD, Herb. Agardh 36711 (Womersley 2003: 485). Notes: Type from Trieste, Adriatic Sea (Womersley, 2003: 485). Boisset et al. (2000: 392) note that the specimen on the right (Agardh's Herbarium no. 36711)was designated as lectotype by Yamada (1931: 193) and not the left specimen, as erroneously indicated on the label in LD.

Adjective (Latin), paniculate.
